It of course dependent on the power and quality of the speaker, and the nature of the room. Generally, a lower powered unit may benefit from being placed in the corner, or at least close to the wall. This will have the effect of increasing the bass output, but can also cause the sound to become ‘boomy’.
Experimentation is the key; you will eventually find a happy medium between bass output and a smooth, controlled response. Some people advocate placing the subwoofer in the location you would normally be sitting when watching TV, then moving round the room to find the area which gives the best bass response.
